Part 1
Alright, let me take the last 12 minutes then to give you a couple of practical conclusions.
And I want to just list them for you briefly and just say a sentence or two.
Number one, personal conclusions.
We need to take the glorious doctrines of Scriptures in its inerrancy,
its infallibility, its inspiration, its authority, all the things
we’ve been looking at.
And we need to apply that all personally to ourselves,
and ask ourselves, can we then say in truth
that the Bible is really, really precious to us
and that we live by it, and we live on it,
and we live to exemplify it.
Can we say with Jeremiah, “Thy words were found and I did eat them,”
and they were “the joy and the rejoicing of my heart.”
Remember the words of J. C. Ryle, a whole Bible makes a whole Christian.
And that whole Bible that makes a whole Christian
needs to so permeate us that it really becomes our life,
that we are people of the Book,
that we are biblical, not just in our doctrine, but in our lifestyle. We want to live
according to the Bible.
Number two. This second half of the course,
where we focus on all these different doctrines
related to general and special revelation, ought to impress upon us
the familial implication, the domestic implication of the importance of doing family worship,
that we bring our family every single day to the Word of God,
and teach them the inspired, inerrant, authoritative Word of God,
no matter what obstacles we face along the way.
It also means, I believe, that we ought to treat the Word of God as sacred in our families.
Our children ought to feel deeply that we profoundly respect the Word of God,
that we’re not joking about the Word of God.
Now, I want to just take one minute to stress how important that is
when I’m speaking to would-be ministers.
Because here’s the problem.
You’re going to be working with the Word of God every day of your lives,
and you are going to know it very well.
And one thing I’ve noticed about ministers, which distresses me greatly, and you hear it at conferences
when you… Well, you know, ministers can be witty, they’d have a way with words.
Their whole profession is their words,
and very close to the surface is the Bible,
because you’re dealing so much in it.
And so often there’s a joke about Abraham,
or a joke about Peter.
For some reason,
when ministers get together, often they can’t really speak from heart to heart to each other.
They’re so used to pastoring other people that they’re not used to making themselves vulnerable
and speaking from a heart to heart about the things of God.
That’s a real tragedy, by the way.
And so they resort to a kind of risque humor about the word of God.
And I’ll tell you that risque humor is not reverential.
It doesn’t hold the Bible in high esteem.
And so I console you,
when you’re with your fellow ministers, but also your own congregation,
when you pastor other people,
let there be a sobriety about you.
It doesn’t mean you can’t laugh with people.
It doesn’t mean you can’t joke about other things.
But let it be a sobriety about you in all things related to the Scriptures,
that your people feel this is a man of God.
And train your people
to do family worship in the same spirit
so that children grow up with this tremendous reverence
which they learn not just from the preacher in the church,
but from their dad in the home.
And you spend some energy in promoting
godly, sustained daily family
worship in the families entrusted to you.
Part 2
Three, there are several ecclesiastical implications as well.
First of all, there’s a pastoral one.
The Word of God is both objective and subjective,
and what we need to do pastorally
in our churches’ families is promote this kind of objective, subjective balance,
which John Murray called “promoting intelligent piety.”
I think it’s critical that we understand
in Prolegomena as we grapple with all these different distinctive doctrines about
special revelation, that we end on the note of saying:
all of these things are important,
but this must all be applied to our hearts, and we must live
this Bible ourselves.
So we must not just know these doctrines in an intelligent way.
They must
transform us into kind of a “practical ‘pietas’,” as Calvin would say,
so that as Calvin concluded: our entire lives ought to be
one unbroken stream of piety.
We ought to be such men of the Book
that we want to fear God in all that we do,
as a result of the aroma of Christ being upon us that flows out of the Word of God.
But it also has missiological implications.
If this Word is inspired, authoritative,
and inerrant, and is needed for salvation,
then this Word must go everywhere.
It’s critical that every nation on the earth has their own translation.
So when you get in the ministry someday, it means to
support Wycliffe Bible translators,
and do what you can to help promote Bible translation everywhere,
but support missionaries and
that pray that God would fill the earth with
solid, God-fearing missionaries that everyone would
have the opportunity to hear the gospel.
It also has organizational implications
in the church. If the Bible is really sufficient
for the church and its organization, and how it’s run
by office bearers and so on,
we need to really search principles of leadership
from the Bible,
and use those principles of leadership in our ministries,
so that we don’t become CEO
administrative professional ministers,
but that we really display the kind of organizational leadership
and pastoral leadership, godly leadership in the church
that we ought to display.
And David Murray, of course, teaches a leadership course now, and I’m sure
he’s doing a wonderful job of it.
Originally, that was one of my courses before he came.
And one time I taught the course entirely from biblical examples of leadership.
I looked at Joseph, one particular quality of his leadership; David, one particular quality;
and use biblical examples, one leadership quality
per example, Nehemiah, that’s a good one to do.
And it’s amazing how leadership examples drawn from the Scriptures
can deliver you from the bondage of becoming a CEO minister,
and instead becoming that warm gospel minister.
But then the next time through, I thought, “Well,
I wonder if I could do this with Jesus himself for a whole course?”
So the next time through, I taught the entire course from Jesus’ leadership.
Because what better leader than Jesus? And he has
all these qualities within himself.
And so in your ministry,
always be asking in all your organizational efforts, and all the ministries
you engage in, all the ministries you promote,
all the ministries you start up in the church:
are they being run by me and by my office bearers
in a way that’s consistent with the principles of leadership recorded in in the Bible?
And then there’s the educational implications.
Every single educational ministry that we run in the church,
we should have a reason for it that’s consistent with the Word of God.
Yeah, there’s more to say here, but
let’s move on to the fourth major area.
Personal, familial, ecclesiastical and now societal,
societal implications.
We are to be men who are responsible to promote Scripture
as far as we are able also in all of society.
“To the law and to the testimony;” Isaiah 8:20,
“they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
So we’re to spread the Word wherever we move in society.
And one thing that I feel very strongly about
is that as ministers of the gospel, you should carry a Bible with you wherever you go,
and be willing to pull it out, be willing to talk to people.
Part 3
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met people just going up an elevator
in a hospital, and instead of just being quiet, I’ve always asked them,
“So what are you here for?”
or “You got a relative?”And sometimes just a happy thing,
“Oh, my wife just had a baby.” Wonderful,
but you could say something edifying.
Many, many times I’ve stepped off
the elevator at the wrong floor because a person began to break down.
“My husband, my husband just had a heart
attack.” “So, can I pray with you?”
“Oh, I would love that.”
You step off the elevator, and you pray, and you bring them God’s words.
“Are you a Christian?” Talk to them for 10 minutes.
You take opportunities
to bring God’s Word wherever you go.
I was really ashamed of myself, but very impressed with a man, Elias Medeiros,
who’s, by the way, he’s gonna be at our conference next year, speaking.
And he’s a teacher at the RTS in Jackson on Missiology, evangelism.
I’ve never seen a man like this in my life.
We took a boat in the jungles of Brazil from one place to another place.
That was like a side trip for like an hour and a half at a conference
to see something in the woods.
We were on that boat for about a half an hour.
There were 40 some people in that boat.
For the time we left and the time we get there… I mean,
you’re going on a seeing tour, right? So I’m just thinking, I’m looking around the river
you know. No.
His goal was these 40 people on this boat. Many of them may be going to hell.
He spoke to every single person on that boat
in that 45 minutes about the gospel.
He just sat himself down beside them and say, “So who are you? I’m Elias.
What’s your name?” “Oh, yeah, wonderful.”
“You have kids? Yeah, okay.”
“How many kids?” “Oh, wonderful.”
“Where do you come from?” “Oh, okay, yeah.”
“Are you a Christian, by the way?”
“No, no.” “Do you have a Bible? I’ll give you a Bible.
You know, the Bible talks about the Word of God and it gives you
what we need for this life and for a better.”
And you’d see the people smiling,
he was just in such a warm way. He wasn’t offensive.
It wasn’t overbearing.
I just watched him move from person to person.
It’s amazing.
Now, I’m not saying we can match that.
But I’m saying we could do a lot better than we do.
Because we’re ministers.
You are gonna be ministers of the gospel.
We know these things. We’ve got to pass on what we know.
Don’t let your… Don’t confine your ministry just to your church members.
不要把我們的事工僅僅局限到服侍我們自己教會的會友上;
Don’t say, “I’m so busy, I have no time for anybody else.”
Just naturally, as you move about among people,
find words to speak. Bring them the Word of God.
Yes.
Student: “Just to support that quickly. I think there’s quite a few, if not all,
taking it to the complete ends I should’ve taken it.
However, even just going to a coffee shop, having a Bible by me
if I am studying something else. I’ve had so many people… I’ve had drunk people at 2:00 a.m.
walk in, you know, just
get some coffee after the bar.
They’re more talkative then, by the way.
‘Hey,’ you know, ‘oh, you are a pastor.’
‘Oh, you’ you know, ‘you are a Christian, or something.’
And then we will just start a discussion on things. And
another reason that we should probably have a real Bible with us,
kindles are great, but I think for carrying with us…”
Dr. Beeke: Oh! Speaking after my own heart here, brother. Yeah, yeah, I agree, I agree.
Carrying a Bible is an image. And people’s… You just see them
even walking through the hospital. I mean,
how many people smile at you, or just look at you in a way,
you know, you’re conveying a message.
Yeah, that’s right.
And yeah, same thing with praying in a restaurant,
and it’s a very simple thing.
Why would anybody pray silently in a restaurant? I don’t understand it.
You’re there and you ask a blessing. Why don’t you just do it? That’s normal.
But people notice it, and they come by, and they comment, and
you get into discussions with people.
Yeah, so that type of thing.
Part 4
And then finally, international implications.
You see, if all of this is true that we’ve been saying about the Word of God,
and the Word of God is this valuable,
people all over the world need the Word of God.
And we need to do what we can to spread the gospel everywhere.
And that may mean for you, as it does for me, doing international trips.
I’ll tell you, international trips are not easy,
especially when you have physical side effects,
as I often get on trips, especially when I get foreign foods in me.
I can’t tell you, on the average trip, I get sick at least once.
It seems like every one of them.
And my flesh just recoils at the idea.
But the gospel, the gospel.
I’ve often said to people,
“I would… if I’ve any other job in the world, I don’t think I’d do all this travel.”
But I do it because the Word of God needs
to go everywhere.
And everyone needs to have the privilege to hear it and receive it.
And we in particular, of all people,
who believe in the free grace of God,
we need to bring that reformed biblical confessional message around this globe,
experiential message, that less than two percent of this world ever hears.
It’s phenomenal.
Responsibilities lie upon us.
So take the doctrines you’ve heard in this class, and take them out to the world.
Prolegomena, first things first.
And talk to people about natural revelation, talk to them about special revelation,
talk to them about what theology is, talk to them what their souls need.
Don’t be shy.
People who believe things that have no bearing on eternity
are not afraid to spew out their ungodly agenda.
They have so much courage and so much excitement in doing it.
We ought to be ten times more than them,
because we’ve got everything to offer them.
So, see every unconverted person as a mission field.
And may God bless you and use you lifelong
as fruitful men and women
of God in whatever capacities you move in.
Bring the Word of God.
Let’s pray together.
Great God of Heaven, we thank Thee so much,
for this class, for the opportunity to teach it.
And we ask thy benediction
upon the doctrines we’ve discussed,
and pray that it may help, and form, and mold, and transform
our minds, so that we realize
more than ever before the tremendous treasure that we have in the sacred Scriptures.
May we mine them for all their worth, for all we are worth,
And use the Word of God
in a lifetime of teaching
or preaching or ministry, wherever Thou will call and send us.
We pray, Lord, use us abundantly, for Thy glory, for the good of sinners,
and for the maturation of saints.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
