Where do we do theology? That’s important as well.
Particularly when you’re in seminary for three, four years,
and you’re talking with seminary students who are always very interested in doing theology,
you can start to feel like you’re in a little bit of an artificial bubble world
that’s going to burst as soon as you leave seminary.
One of the most common concerns I hear when a man leaves seminary,
for example, a brother in our denomination who left for a church of 15 people,
and got supported by “Tentmaking Fund” from our church, part of the supports,
so he was able to not have to work.
I mean, he still has a lot of the same work that every minister has,
he has to preach two sermons every Sunday, you know, he had a midweek prayer meeting class, so.
But he said to me, from Monday to Saturday, you know, most weeks,
I have no one in the hospital,
and I visited my entire congregation the first two weeks I was there.
And I love preparing sermons but I am so lonely,
I miss the fellowship of the other brothers in the seminary so much.
It’s unbelievable.
And this man is really really lonely.
Well, you see, he said to me, even the 15 people in my church,
I can’t talk theology the way I could at the seminary.
So what you got to do, now hopefully not everyone is in the lonely situation,
but you got to remember that you are doing theology always,
not in an ivory tower in seminary where everybody is rowing the boat the same way,
everybody is reformed, everybody wants to come to an agreement of the truth.
You are doing theology among fallen mankind,
also in the church with fallen sinners.
You are doing theology from the pulpit, and in teaching
and in pastoring to that woman who just fell in love
with someone else who is not her husband. You know, what do you say to such a person?
So not only are we sinners,
who still grapple with our remaining frailty in doing theology,
but the people we minister to are fallen people.
I just had one of our graduates who got a ThM here recently
and he’s accepted a call, he’s in the process of going to the church.
And he just wrote me a long letter, a page and half,
of all the problems he sees in the church, and he says he’s getting cold feet.
He’s accepted the call, but he’s kind of worried about going to this church.
I just shot him back a note and I said, brother, you told me
how God called you there, and what do you expect?
You expect a perfect church where everybody is perfectly sound theologically?
They wouldn’t need you at all. You are going to real people in a real situation.
you can’t go to a church where there’s not a lot of problems, because people are sinners,
there’s problems everywhere in every church.
If you are gonna try to be a minister and avoid problems,
you better, well, you are not called in the first place.
Because you can’t do anything in life
with people without facing problems.
And if you’re thinking you’re gonna raise kids without ever facing a problem,
you better not have children. I shouldn’t say that.
Replenish, fill the earth. God will help you.
But the point is, with the congregation it’s the same thing.
There’s always problems, there’s always problems.
And if you can work together with your entire session
and not have one person row the boat the other way, just thank God.
But that’s not the common experience of ministers.
It just seems like that there’s always one person, at least in my life, almost always one person
who’s just really at me to stop the vision of spreading the Gospel, and this type of thing.
So you are doing theology in the middle of fallen mankind in the church,
but also in the exterior world.
And so you are living, and it needs to be this way, you are living a life of antithesis against the world.
“The world will hate you because it hated me.”
So don’t expect the friendship of the world, the friendship of everybody,
everybody always agreeing with you.
Jesus said, the calling of a theologian is a calling to suffer persecution.
“Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes:
and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues,
and persecute them from city to city: that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth,
from the blood of righteous Abel
unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.”
You know, I don’t know if many of you have seen that, but I have in my room,
I got my computer in front of me, right? And right underneath it,
I’ve only got one thing taped to my computer,it’s a quote of Charles Spurgeon,
and I read it nearly every week because it’s right there.
And basically what Spurgeon says is this,
stop feeling sorry for yourselves when you get persecuted.
Has anybody broken your bones yet?
Has anybody thrown you in prison yet?
Count it an honor to suffer the persecution for Christ’s sake, and keep on going.
See, of course you have to ask, are my critics right
and you have to change if your critics are right to whatever degree they’re right.
But you can’t be a leader and you can’t be doing theology and telling people what truth is
without getting barraged, deluged with people that opposes the truth.
The truth creates division.
I was in Grand Rapids for about one year in my ministry here,
and my predecessor was very different from what I was.
And there were people that wanted me to be exactly like he was, it just is impossible.
And it seemed like people either loved me or hated me.
And I went to see Ernest Reisinger in Florida, I stayed with him for a couple of days.
He was a pastor of pastors, very great godly man.
He took me out to eat, first night, and he was quite a character.
Came into the restaurant, he walks over, there was a pianist,
it’s a nice restaurant, pianist playing some secular music
but it wasn’t bad music, just secular music.
He went over there, I don’t know what he slipped her,
I think a five dollar bill or something, and you know whispered something.
All of sudden, she started playing these Christian hymns, you know.
And we sat down, so he looks at me, goes, all right Joel, he says,
tell me how it’s really going for you in Grand Rapids.
And I said, well, you know I really don’t know, I really don’t know.
I said, but it’s just really strange, I said, because nobody is neutral to me,
people just either hate me or they love me.
I don’t know how to explain it any way else.
And he was a construction worker when he was young, he got wonderfully converted.
He was just big husky fellow with these huge hands.
And he took his big hand and he slapped across my knee and he goes,
that is great!
What do you mean, what do you mean?
Well, he says, it means that you are getting through. It means that the truth is getting through.
Because they won’t hate you, they won’t love you, if the truth was not getting through.
I never forgot that statement. That was so helpful for me.
You know, when a minister says, well everything is going well in my church,
you know, I’ve got no conversions, I’ve got no problems, nobody gives me any griefs,
the consistory is always cooperative, everything goes smoothly, never have any troubles.
I say wait a minute, wait a minute, is the Holy Spirit working?
Or is it just a dead church?
You see, when you do theology,
and you teach truth among fallen mankind in the church, outside the church,
you are gonna come into trouble.
Paul said, “Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sake,
that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory”.
I endure all things.
Also, when you do theology in the church, the positive side is that
there will be a number of people, hopefully the majority of people, who will grow, grow spiritually.
And as your understanding of theology grows in spiritual insight,
and they hear from the pulpit week after week,
or from the the classroom, wherever you are teaching,
that you are growing in spiritual insights.
And they can, as Al Martin would say, smell the aroma that you’ve been with Jesus that week,
that you are growing in your ministry, they normally will grow with you.
Now here is the frightening thing, remember what Machen said,
a church’s level of holiness will seldom rise above the level of their minister’s holiness.
But the encouraging thing is, if you by the grace of God are growing in holiness
and growing in holy theology, your people will grow with you.
And you will grow with them and in them and through them,
because you’re a community, you’re a church family.
So when I do theology in my study privately
and I am typing away on a particular chapter for a particular book,
and then I go out and visit that God fearing woman
who’s grown so much in the last year and she has some wonderful nuggets to share with me,
and gives me wonderful meditations to think about.
So that when I walk away from her,
I feel like she’s pastoring me more than I’m pastoring her.
Guess what? When I come back into my study and continue that chapter,
I’ve got fresh vigor, I’ve got maybe deeper insights,
So it’s not just knowledge I get from books,
she matures me and I mature her by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
So this is one of the beautiful things about doing theology.
It’s one of the beautiful things about teaching on a faculty
because as theologians, the faculty can encourage each other and challenge each other.
It’s a wonderful thing about fellow students,
iron sharpens iron, do talk to each other, do talk theology with each other, that’s great.
You’ll help each other a lot.
So as a minister, it’s a wonderful thing to experience Ephesians 4,
the unity of the brethren in the church,
and to have certain friends in the church.
You don’t make those friendships explicit,
you don’t always walk up to the same people after church service on the parking lot in the open,
of course not, you don’t play favorites.
But privately, there are certain people that you know you can grow from.
You use those people, you visit those people,
just to tap it more and spend a little bit more time with them
because you can grow from them. And that would help the whole body.
And so Paul describes that in Ephesians 4,
a spiritual growth as the intertwining of the doctrinal and relational development in the body of Christ.
You are growing in relation with others, you are growing in doctrine with others.
And he says, this is the aim of theology, the unity of the faith,
a theological unity inseparable
from the practical “unity of the Spirit”, verses 2 and 3, experienced in love.
And so you “speak the truth in love,” he says, verse 15,
which is not mere honesty, but it’s conversing about sound doctrine, verse 14.
And so when you have theological ministry,
you learn to talk to people from heart to heart about God’s glorious truth.
And I know of no one better as a mentor here than Morris Roberts.
I’ve been around him a number of times now, and from Scotland.
And he has such a gift when he’s around people,
he actually won’t allow more than five minutes of mere level one conversation about shallow things.
How is the weather, you know, your family is doing okay, okay.
I mean, those are significant things, but how long can you talk about that?
What does it really profit your soul?
And but he will just do something like this.
Say you are around the dinner table and there’s a moment of silence.
He’d say, “You know what, I was thinking the other time about the intercession of Christ
and the fact that he intercedes for me every moment, every single moment,
and every believer as well.
I wonder if any of you have given any thought to that?”
“How is that possible for Christ to intercede
for every believer at once
and for each child of God as His only child, how’s that possible?”
He just throws it out as a question.
Immediately all the conversation is changed, right?
Suddenly you have a substantive conversation
about a very substantive subject.
And so, in the congregation, when you can do this through face to face fellowship,
through preaching, through teaching, through counseling,
through writing if you are a writer,
to write to your congregation pastoral letters and other things.
This can all generate theology in the best sense of the word.
And your goal in all real theology, don’t forget this, is what?
Communion with God, to the glory of God.
So people get to know God better in the faith of Jesus Christ,
and grow in the grace of God in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
And so when John summarizes his ministry, he says, in the opening words, verse 3 of 1 John,
what’s my goal?
“我們將所看見、所聽見的傳給你們,使你們與我們相交;
“That which we have seen and heard, declare we unto you that ye also may have fellowship with us
and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
Now this is the beautiful thing, this is so beautiful. Don’t ever take it for granted.
You go down the street, and you get a work for a certain company.
You can go in and maybe at lunch time, you can speak a few words about God to somebody.
But you have to do it carefully, you might get into trouble,
you don’t know how much you can say.
And during work time, you can’t speak about the Lord because, well you know, you got to be working.
But as a minister of the Gospel,
look at this, John says, we have fellowship with one another,
and truly our fellowship is with the Father and the Son.
What an incredible profession!
You have the opportunity to speak about the Lord all the time to people.
You know, I can leave this classroom this afternoon
and I can go visit some widow in a nursing home
and just have a heart to heart conversation with her,
this afternoon if I want to, about the Lord.
What a privilege!
Don’t take that for granted.
You can do theology every day openly.
So let’s do theology, let’s do it in the fellowship of Christ’s church
despite the opposition we do, from time to time, receive.
