尼西亞信經
- 我信獨一上帝,全能的父,創造天地和有形無形萬物的主。
- 我信獨一主耶穌基督,上帝的獨生子,在萬世以前為父所生,
- 出於神而為神,出於光而為光,出於真神而為真神,受生而非被造,
- 與父一體,萬物都是藉著祂造的﹔
- 祂為要拯救我們世人,從天降臨,因著聖靈,並從童貞女馬利亞成肉身,而為人﹔
- 在本丟彼拉多手下,為我們釘在十字架上,受難,埋葬﹔

迦克墩信經
(Chalcedon Creed, 451)
- 我們跟隨聖教父,同心合意教導人宣認同一位子,我們的主耶穌基督,有完全的神性,也有完全的人性;
- 真是神,也真是人;有理性的靈魂,也有身體;
- 按神性說,與父本體相同(homoousios);按人性說,與我們本體(substance,essence)相同,凡事與我們一樣,只是沒有罪;
- 按神性說,在萬世之先,為父所生;按人性說,在這末後的日子,為了拯救我們,由上帝之母,童女馬利亞所生;
- 這位基督,既是子,又是主,也是神的獨生子;具有二性,不相混亂,不相交換;不能分開,不能離散;
- 二性的區別不因聯合而消失,各性的特點反而得以保存,會合於一個位格、一個實質(subsistence)之內,不是分離成為兩個位格,而是同一位子,是神的獨生子,是道,是上帝,是主耶穌基督;
- 正如眾先知一開始論到祂時所講的,也如主耶穌基督自己所教訓我們的,又如諸聖教父的信經所傳給我們的。

這首詩歌不僅是敬拜讚美之詩,簡直是《尼西亞信經》和《迦克頓信經》的註解!
[1] 基督是神,與父同等
每一節都是這樣結束:基督是『主』。『主』是指『上帝』,希臘文的『主』,是用來翻譯希伯來文《舊約聖經》的『耶和華』的!基督完全是上帝!
[2] 基督是神(續):祂與父神的關係
第四節說:基督是『道』,是父上帝的『道』,如今在肉身顯現。『道』是基督眾多名稱之一,特別是《約翰福音》第一章所用。意思是:聖子道成肉身,道成肉身的耶穌基督把父顯明出來。而當然,聖子穿上了人性:人性包括肉體(身體)和靈魂。耶穌完全是人,但沒有放下神性。第二節說:基督是『神之神,光之光(真神,真光),受生,不是受造。』道與上帝同在。道就是上帝。《約翰福音》1:1-2。
[3]基督的神性與人性
這是信經特別要強調的,避免好幾方面對基督的神人二性的偏差/誤解。一個位格,就是:那位道成肉身的聖子,耶穌基督。在這一個位格裡,有二性:神性和人性。神性與人性,沒有混亂,不是混在一起·。乃是奧秘地『聯合』,聯合在一個位格裡。信經的用詞是『聯合』。我們最好也謹慎,用這詞。加爾文說,有時候,我們必需用一些《聖經》沒有用過的字,好叫我們能解釋,應用(活用)《聖經》的真理。但是用這些字,越少越好,越『吝嗇』越好(加爾文的用詞)。
[4] 基督的人性,和從同貞女生,是歷史事實
第二節說:他不嫌棄(憎恨)從童貞女腹中所生。基督從童貞女所生,是歷史事實,是《聖經》清楚的記載和教導。這就是基督的謙卑/降卑。而他在歷史中,在一個地方誕生:伯利恆城。《米彌迦書》5:2。誕生的嬰孩,卻是眾天使的大君王。
[5] 基督的降卑和得勝
基督的降卑,是為了得勝,勝過罪,勝過魔鬼。聖誕節已經預示復活節和基督升天。基督的降生,一生,死,復活,升天,是不可分開的;是一個整體。

The hymn was first published by John Francis Wade in his collection Cantus Diversi (1751),[2][9] with four Latin verses, and music set in the traditional square notation used for medieval liturgical music. It was published again in the 1760 edition of Evening Offices of the Church. It also appeared in Samuel Webbe‘s An Essay on the Church Plain Chant (1782). The hymn tune also made its way to the Sacred Harp tradition, appearing as “Hither Ye Faithful, Haste with Songs of Triumph” in an 1860 collection.[11] With “Herbei, o ihr Gläub’gen” a German translation of the Latin text was published in 1823 by Friedrich Heinrich Ranke.[12]
